We boarded Hong Kong Airlines’ last flight to LAX with no in-flight service due to fear of the initial outbreak of Covid. U.S.-based airlines halted Hong Kong flights just two days prior on February 4th.

Both Hong Kong and LAX Airports implemented unprecedented health and safety checks, and we were forced to wear masks for the very first time long before US mask mandates.

We landed at 8 AM, took off our masks and Uber’d home to find a threatening eviction-style letter taped to our front door for non-payment of rent. But we’d arranged payment before we left.

Unbeknownst to us, our longtime landlord of 10+ years sold our 19-unit building to Coastline Real Estate Advisors while we were on a month-long honeymoon through Asia. Coastline never introduced themselves. They simply threatened us.

We hurriedly contacted our new landlords who instructed us to put a check inside a newly installed on-property dropbox. We did but were immediately threatened again and again with unfounded accusations of non-payment.

We could clearly see the check sitting inside the dropbox. They simply hadn’t picked up the check despite claiming to have checked the dropbox on a daily basis.

This would be Coastline’s first lie of many.

We didn’t take a picture of the threatening letter or the check sitting inside the dropbox because we did not anticipate the treatment to come.
